Overview

Electrolysis is the only method of 100% permanent hair removal approved by the British Medical Association. Unlike other hair removal techniques, it is effective on all hair types and skin tones, making it a safe and inclusive option for anyone seeking lasting results.

Electrolysis works by inserting a fine probe into the hair follicle and applying a carefully controlled electrical current. This targets and permanently destroys the cells responsible for hair growth while protecting the surrounding skin.

For NHS-funded treatments, we use the Apilus xCell, a state-of-the-art electrolysis system designed for maximum comfort and precision. With advanced technology, it delivers stable currents that efficiently eliminate hair in just a few thousandths of a second—making the process virtually painless while minimising skin irritation.

This treatment is ideal for those requiring permanent hair removal as part of their NHS Hair Reduction pathway, ensuring safe, medically approved results tailored to individual needs.

If you are receiving NHS-funded electrolysis, please refer to your treatment plan for appointment scheduling and guidelines.

Pre NHS Electrolysis

Proper preparation before your electrolysis treatment is essential to ensure safety, comfort, and optimal results. Please follow these guidelines:

Hair Management:

  • Avoid Plucking, Waxing, or Threading: Refrain from these methods for the entirety of your treatment course, as they remove the hair root necessary for effective electrolysis.

  • Shaving: You may shave the area up to 2-3 days before your appointment. Ensure there is 2-3 mm of hair growth visible during the session to facilitate proper treatment.

Skin Preparation:

  • Hydration: Keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Well-hydrated skin can make the treatment more comfortable and effective.

Product Usage:

  • Discontinue Certain Skincare Products: Stop using products containing retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), or any chemical exfoliants 48 hours before treatment. These products can increase skin sensitivity.

Lifestyle Considerations:

  • Limit Caffeine and Sugar: On the day of your appointment, try to minimise caffeine and sugar intake, as they can increase skin sensitivity.

  • Sun Exposure: Avoid excessive sun exposure and do not use tanning beds for at least 72 hours before your treatment. Sunburned or tanned skin is more susceptible to adverse reactions.

Hygiene:

  • Cleanliness: Shower and cleanse the treatment area thoroughly on the day of your appointment. Do not apply makeup, deodorant, or any skincare products to the area to ensure it is free from potential irritants.

By adhering to these pre-treatment guidelines, you can help ensure a safe and effective electrolysis experience. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Post NHS Electrolysis

Following your electrolysis treatment, it’s essential to adhere to specific aftercare guidelines to ensure optimal healing and results. Please follow the advice below:

Immediately After Treatment:

  • Cleanliness: Keep the treated area clean and dry for the first 48 hours. Avoid touching the area to prevent bacteria transfer.

  • Soothing the Skin: Apply aloe vera or witch hazel gel regularly using clean cotton wool to soothe redness and prevent infection.

For the First 48 Hours Post-Treatment:

  • Avoid: Touching or picking at the treated area, as this can introduce bacteria and cause irritation.

  • Activities: Refrain from activities that cause sweating or friction, such as intense exercise, to prevent irritation of hair follicles.

  • Heat Exposure: Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, saunas, and steam rooms, as these can cause pigmentation issues.

  • Water Exposure: Do not swim or take hot baths/showers to prevent potential infection and irritation.

  • Skin Products: Avoid applying makeup, deodorants, perfumes, or perfumed lotions to the treated area to prevent irritation.

Ongoing Care:

  • Sun Protection: Always apply a high-protection sunscreen (at least SPF 30) to the treated area when exposed to sunlight to prevent hyperpigmentation.

  • Healing: If scabs or crusts form, do not pick at them; allow them to heal naturally to avoid scarring.

  • Skin Care: Use gentle, non-perfumed cleansers on the treated area and avoid exfoliating until the skin has fully healed.

By following these guidelines, you support the healing process and achieve the best possible results from your electrolysis treatment. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
